Views from Below the Surface

Mitchell J. Feigenbaum
Rockefeller Univ., NY

Things are often different from what they superficially seem to be. Better put, a subterranean viewpoint can enable in us a much better and further-reaching apprehension of what had superficially seemed even clear. This notion shall serve as a thread through a discussion of some of the ideas and concepts I have been most struck by in my scientific career. I shall include in this tour ancient things such as epicycles, universality at the onset of chaos, and insights into how we deem size and shape in our ordinary visual experiences. The discussion will be fundamentally non-technical, with a sprinkling of technical footnotes for those so inclined.
